How telephone verification actually works (and why it changes everything)
Telephone-verified is one of those phrases that gets attached to leads to bump up the price, often without much justification behind it. So what does telephone verification actually involve, what should be happening on the call, and what's the difference between a properly verified lead and one that's just had a token "are you still interested?" enquiry attached?
The call from the prospect's side
A prospect has filled in an enquiry form, responded to an article in Fleetpoint, or otherwise indicated they're looking at leasing. Within a working day, our team rings them.
The call opens with a quick confirmation: "Hi, this is [name] from XL Marketing — I'm following up on your enquiry about vehicle leasing. Is now a good time, or would you prefer I call back?" If now isn't good, we book a time. If now is good, the qualification call takes about 5–10 minutes.
What we cover in a verification call
The structure is roughly:
- Confirm what they're looking at. "You mentioned you're considering a [vehicle] — is that still where you're at, or has it changed?" Often it has. People are looking at three or four vehicles before they finally commit.
- Confirm context. Personal lease or business? Sole trader, limited company, or company car for an employee? This shapes everything from BIK treatment to which leasing brokers can serve them.
- Establish timing. When does their current vehicle/contract end? Are they tied to a specific date or flexible? A prospect who's six months out is a different beast from one whose lease ends next month.
- Establish budget. "What sort of monthly figure were you thinking?" If they have an existing lease ending, we ask what they're paying now — it's a better benchmark than asking what they want to pay.
- Confirm mileage and contract length preferences. Two of the biggest cost drivers. We get them on the record so the broker isn't quoting blind.
- Set the expectation. "Just so you know, I'll be passing your details to one of the leasing brokers we work with — they'll be in touch on [day/time]. They'll have all this on file so you won't have to repeat yourself."
Setting the expectation is the bit most lead suppliers skip. It's the most important step. The prospect needs to know who's calling them next and why — that's the difference between a warm follow-up and another cold call.
What we record
Every verification call generates a lead record with:
- Confirmed contact details (name, phone, email, company)
- Vehicle of interest with specifics
- Budget and any flex around it
- Mileage and contract length
- Timing — when they're looking to commit
- Any notes from the conversation (e.g. "currently with [competitor], looking for better mileage allowance")
- Agreed time for the broker to ring back
That last one matters. We agree a time during the call so the broker isn't ringing blind into a meeting or while the prospect's driving.
What "telephone-verified" sometimes actually means elsewhere
The bar is set very differently across suppliers. We've seen "verified" leads where the verification was:
- A 30-second call that just confirmed the prospect's name and number
- A voicemail being left
- An automated text message ("reply YES to confirm")
- The prospect ticking a box on a form
None of those is a verification in the sense that matters to a broker. A genuine verification means a human conversation about what the prospect wants — long enough to give the broker something to work with on the follow-up call.
The two questions to ask any supplier
Before you commit:
- "How long does your average verification call take?" — anything under 4 minutes isn't a real qualification call.
- "Can I see an example of the lead notes you'd send?" — if they can't show you the depth of the qualification, the depth probably isn't there.
Telephone verification is the most labour-intensive part of generating a leasing lead. It's also the bit that actually makes it convert. A lead that's been properly qualified by phone is a different product from a CSV row, and the suppliers who do it well typically have the close rates to prove it. More on how we work.
